Podcast

In this shortened, low-key and music-free episode, we talk about the last few weeks. Forgive the poor audio quality, but we thought it would be nice to get out of the studio and record from the great outdoors. We talk about our move, what we’ve experienced so far, and then we discuss a major lifestyle change that could be happening.

For those of you missing Patrick’s voice, he’ll be back soon.

Corey and Tawny have an announcement in this episode. Big changes are coming to our personal lives and to Sounds From the Attic. This is a serious episode, but we thought it would be a good avenue to share this news with you.

Music we play on this episode:
No Knife – Academy Flight Song
The Mountain Goats – Weekend in Western Illinois
Jimmy Eat World – Ramina

Yes, we promised a holiday episode…so here it is. It’s 3 weeks late and we don’t talk about the holidays. We talk about The Impossibles, “dry heat” and a town that’s full of stench. Towards the end of the show, Patrick makes the announcement that he has formed a band and hopes to be playing shows soon. He wants your opinions on the band name. Comment on our Facebook page with your suggestions or email music@soundsfromtheattic.net

We play:
The Wiitala Brothers – Say Goodbye
The Jealous Sound – Anxious Arms

Forget structure! On this episode, we decide to take SFTA in a new direction. It’s free-form, “like a lava lamp”. Besides the banter, we decide to address the fact that we are old and out of touch with the scene, so we play a few songs from current independent bands. We play This, My Vendetta (Scottsdale, AZ) and Hello Ramona (Quad Cities). These are two bands comprised of younger folks that we have loose connections to, in the form of relatives dating band members and drunk encounters at Steak n Shake. After we listen to these songs, we give our honest opinions and comment on the evolution of punk/hardcore.

That’s about as serious as this episode gets. We cover too many other topics to list. We only had to edit out one story on this episode. Just listen.

On this, our 30th episode, we welcome our 2nd Pacific Northwest guest in 3 episodes. Jesse Codling from forYoungModerns. We talk a lot about the Quad Cities independent music scene in the late 90′s and early 00′s, including both perspectives from an contentious event that introduced Corey and Jesse.

We play “Protector” by the QC band, American Dust.  Be sure to head over to forYoungModerns to see Jesse’s review of the Protector EP and a video that Jesse recorded when he was back here in the QC.  We also play a Seattle band that has caught Jesse’s attention – Pickwick.  We play “The Round” off Myths Vol. 2.

It’s a low-key late night. Tawny is temporarily fueled by Watermelon Puckers, after working a 16 hour day. Patrick tells a few stories from his trip to “The Denny’s” with the family. He also reads some Facebook status updates from someone that could use some tips in spelling and sentence structure. At the end of the episode (when Tawny practically falls asleep on mic), we make a big announcement. Patrick jumps in with an announcement of his own. If you have enjoyed the addition of Patrick to SFTA, you will be interested in his news.

We play:

Rival Schools – Wring It Out
Los Duggans – Calvary

Intro and Outro – Of Montreal

Previous guests Patrick and Jacob return to hear some new music from older bands that have re-united. We listen to new tracks from Braid and The Get Up Kids for the first times and discuss our impressions. As you can imagine, we covered a lot of other topics, too.

It’s Part II of our session with Kate and Ray.  We are also joined by Patrick.

This episode is purely parenting talk.  Ray and Kate are a little nervous about becoming parents and we share our vast expertise with them. We apologize for the length of this episode.

We play:

Beach House – Norway

The Intro and Outro music for episodes #26 and #27 were Ray’s band, Mikoto.

Ever wonder what Patrick looks like?

We welcome guests Ray Harkins and his wife, Kate on this episode.  There’s lots of talk on parenting and the current state of the “scene”.  Be sure to check out Ray’s podcast, First World Problems, in iTunes.

We play:

The National – Bloodbuzz Ohio

It’s our holiday 2010 episode.  We play two Christmas songs by Sleeping at Last.  We also talk about a Minus the Bear show review we did for Zoiks! Online.  We play a song off their new cd OMNI.

Sleeping at LastMerry Little Christmas and I’ll Be Home for Christmas

Minus the Bear – Into the Mirror

Check out our review of the Minus the Bear show in Iowa City at Zoiks here.
